Skin reflects your gut & liver. For clear skin, eat & do this:

If your skin keeps flaring up despite expensive topicals and cleansers, it might be time to look within. In my experience, stubborn acne, rashes, eczema, psoriasis and dryness often point back to two organs behind the scenes: your gut and your liver. When they are consistently supported, healthier, clearer skin tends to follow.

Here is how the gut-liver-skin connection works, and the food and daily habits I use with clients to support it.

How does your gut and liver affect your skin?

Your skin is one of your body's exit routes for waste. Your liver is the main filter, and your gut is how that filtered waste leaves the body. When either one is sluggish or congested, the body looks for other ways to clear out, and skin often becomes the "plan B" exit route. That can show up as acne, rashes, eczema or psoriasis.

I treat the skin from the inside out, because when you clear the pathways first, the skin has less work to do.

How does a congested liver affect your skin?

A liver that is overburdened cannot clear toxins, waste or hormones as well as it should. When those pathways are blocked, the body looks for alternate routes to eliminate waste, and skin is one of them.

Eat: bitter greens (rocket, dandelion), beetroot, artichoke, broccoli, cabbage, eggs and lemon. Bitter foods help stimulate bile flow, which your liver relies on to carry waste out.

Sip: dandelion tea, a traditional liver-supporting herb.

Avoid: alcohol, sugar, ultra-processed food, seed oils and unnatural fats.

Habits: warm lemon water with a pinch of salt on waking, castor oil pack over the liver, early dinners, and periodic liver flushing or fasting.

What is the gut-liver axis, and why does it matter for skin?

Your gut and liver are in constant conversation. Poor clearance through the gut means toxins and waste can be reabsorbed, and that can show up on your skin, often presenting as eczema, psoriasis, rashes or acne.

A healthy, diverse microbiome supports nutrient absorption, waste removal and hormone clearance. Sugar, alcohol, processed food, refined carbs and medications can wreck its balance.

Eat: fermented vegetables, kefir, natural yoghurt, bone broth and meat stocks, and aim for 40 different plants a week (this includes herbs).

Sip: fennel or ginger tea after meals to soothe digestion.

Avoid: sugar, refined carbs, alcohol, ultra-processed food, and excess or unnecessary medications.

Habits: chew slowly, eat sitting down, aim for at least one bowel movement a day (ideally one for each meal), avoid snacking between meals, and try periodic fasting.

Why does bowel hydration matter for your skin?

Your skin and your bowel both need water. Hydrated skin is plumper and calmer, and stool is about 75% water. When your bowel is dehydrated, waste gets dry and stuck, and that congestion can show up as skin issues. I have found a combination of water-based-cooking and regular home enemas to be truly amazing for skin health.

Eat: daily soups and broths, meat stocks, seasonal organic produce, fermented vegetables, fermented dairy and herbal teas. Water-based cooking boosts hydration.

Avoid: processed and ultra-processed foods, charred cooking styles, alcohol and sugar.

Habits: regular home enemas, colonics when available, and warm lemon water on waking. If you are new to home enemas, Happy Bum Co make the most user-friendly kits. Use code GUTLAB for a discount.

Which supplements help with gut and skin health?

Actually, think food first before you worry about supplements. Supplements are there to support where food falls short, and they are not superior to food.

The ones I find can be helpful:

  • Probiotics for gut diversity

  • Slippery elm to soothe the gut lining

  • Aloe vera for hydrating bowel support

What matters more is great daily bowel movements, good bile flow and hydration.

How do you get clear skin from the inside out?

Stop treating your skin only from the outside. Detox, eat hydrating food, hydrate your colon, and feed your microbiome, and great skin follows.

Where should you start?

Start with your meals. Working one-on-one with me, we look at your history, your goals and your real life, then make tweaks to support your skin. Consistency, not perfection, is what changes skin.

Frequently asked questions

Can your liver cause skin problems?

Yes. A congested liver and sluggish gut can contribute to skin issues, because the body uses the skin as an alternate exit route when waste is not clearing well. Supporting bile flow, bowel movements and hydration is a good place to start.

What foods are good for your liver and skin?

Bitter greens like rocket and dandelion, beetroot, artichoke, broccoli, cabbage, eggs and lemon all support the liver. Pair them with fermented foods, broths, water-based-cooking and a wide variety of plants for your gut.

How long does it take to see skin changes?

It varies from person to person. Consistent daily habits matter more than doing everything perfectly, which is why I tailor each plan to your life.
